Weighers
Weighing machines, also called weigh fillers, measure a target amount of product before it is packed into a bag, pouch, tub or other container. They help keep pack weights consistent, reduce excess product giveaway and make repetitive filling more efficient. Unlike volumetric fillers, weighers control the dose by weight rather than by the space the product occupies.
How weighers work
Product is fed into weighing buckets fitted with load cells. Linear or vibratory weighers use controlled feed trays to approach the target weight, then release the measured batch. Multihead weighers distribute product across several hoppers and select a combination of weighed portions close to the target. The batch can then be discharged into a container or transferred to a compatible packaging machine.
Typical products and applications
- Dry foods: rice, grains, seeds, nuts, beans, pulses and coffee beans.
- Snacks and confectionery: chips, crackers, sweets, dried fruit and similar piece products.
- Fresh and frozen foods: vegetables, fruit pieces, meat and seafood, using equipment designed for those products.
- Non-food products: pellets, small plastic components and hardware packed by weight.
The appropriate weigher depends on the target pack weight, product size and flow characteristics, required output and cleaning needs. Fine powders, sticky ingredients, fragile pieces and irregular products need a suitable feeding and handling arrangement; suitability should be confirmed for the particular product and machine.
